The School of Insurance and Economics at the University of International Business and Economics is one of the first universities in China to offer insurance courses. Since 1951, SIE has been engaged in the teaching and research of insurance theory and practice. Even in the 20 years when the insurance was suspended, SIE has continued to teach students insurance knowledge for certain kinds of insurance concerning foreign affairs. In 1987, The Teaching and Research Office of International Transportation and Insurance was established (later developed into the Department of Insurance of the University of International Business and Economics). In 1988, SIE started the master's program in international insurance. In 1988, the Financial and Banking Institute of China set up a bachelor’s major in insurance. In June 2000, the Department of Insurance at the Financial and Banking Institute of China and the Department of Insurance of UIBE were consolidated into the new Department of Insurance at UIBE. In 2007, the School of Insurance and Economics was officially established. During the 70 years of development, it has carried forward the fine traditions of the Department of Insurance at the Financial and Banking Institute of China and the Department of Insurance at UIBE, upheld the concept of innovative development, and inherited the college culture of erudition, integrity, pioneering and enterprising. SIE has become one of the important institutions in the theoretical application research and think tank service in the filed of risk management and insurance, actuarial science, social security, and labor economics (health economics).
Included in the project of Double First-Class disciplines, the programs of SIE are international and inclusive. For bachelor study, students can choose from the following three programs: Risk Management and Insurance (National First-Class Discipline, National First-Class Major), Actuarial Science (National First-Class Discipline, National First-Class Major, and Beijing Municipal First-Class Major), Labor Economics and Social Security (Beijing Municipal First-Class major), and an experimental class of actuarial science (National Plan for Cultivating Top Students in Basic Disciplines 2.0, National First-Class Discipline, National First-Class Major). For the master study, there are three second-level academic master’s programs in finance, actuarial science, and labor economics, and one professional master's program in insurance. At the doctoral level, there are three doctoral programs in finance, actuarial science, and labor economics. Besides, SIE has a postdoctoral Research Station in Applied Economics. SIE consists of three departments and three research centers: the Department of Risk Management and Insurance, the Department of Labor Economics and Social Security, the Department of Actuarial Science and Risk Management, the Research Center for Health Insurance and Health Economics, the Research Center for Insurance and Social Security Law, and China Research Center for Risk Management and Insurance. SIE has established academic relations with well-known foreign universities, as well as dual degree programs with many foreign universities. It has established academic cooperation relations with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Michigan State University, Temple University, St. John’s University, Frankfurt University in Germany, Yokohama University in Japan, etc. through many channels. It has established the “2+2” dual degree program of actuarial Science with the University of Kent in the UK, the “2+2", "4+1” and “1+1” programs with the University of Manchester for undergraduates and master students. SIE has signed agreements with St. John’s University and the University of North Carolina in the United States to jointly run a program for students, providing a favorable external environment for the development of students. SIE is the first one in mainland China to obtain the actuary exam exemption certification in the UK held by the Insitute and Faculty of Actuaries, qualify as the UCAP universities of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) in North America, and obtain the VEE course certification of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) exams for actuaries.
Currently, there are 63 members of the faculty of SIE, including 48 full-time teachers (12 professors, 25 associate professors, and 11 lecturers) and 15 staff managing the Party and administrative affairs. The SIE has 11 teachers who have overseas study experience, accounting for 23% of the full-time teachers. There are also quite a number of Huiyuan Outstanding scholars, Huiyuan Outstanding young scholars, Huiyuan Excellent young scholars. The teachers of SIE have a strong influence in the insurance industry as well as in society. They have a variety of social appointments, such as Member of the CPPCC National Committee, advisory expert of National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, Executive Director of Asia Pacific of Risk and Insurance Association, Executive Director of the Insurance Institute of China, Executive director of the China Social Insurance Association, Executive Director of the China Association of Actuaries, Recipient of “Beijing Red Flag Medal” (issued to women with great achievements on Mar 8th), popular experts who commented on medical reform expert in 2019, experts of social security and aging services for the Asian Development Bank. Every year, about 7 teachers would be invited to consult on national or provincial government agencies. Apart from that, the SIE has also invited over 100 famous scholars and experts in insurance to be part-time professors.
The college focuses on team building. It stimulates interdisciplinary exchanges of teachers and forms a team consisting of both junior and senior teachers. Now teachers of SIE head projects supported by the Major Program of the National Social Science Foundation of China, Key Program of the National Social Science Foundation of China and Program of the National Social Science Foundation of China. The SIE has 6 innovation teams on the university level, which plays an important role in scientific research. From 2011 to 2020, a total number of 247 papers were published in journals of CSSCI, accounting for 22% of the total number of published papers in journals of CSSCI, far ahead of insurance schools from sister universities.
The SIE Graduates are of high performance and consequently the employment rate is very high: the employment rate of undergraduates of 2021 is 98.21%. The percentage of undergraduate graduates going abroad for further study is much higher than that of their sister universities. 51.03% of undergraduates of 2022 and 50.63% of undergraduates of 2023 have received offers from overseas universities. 48% of these offers are from the top 50 of the QS World University Rankings such as Oxford University, Cambridge University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Columbia University, Cornell University, University of Chicago, and New York University. Students have won prizes from many national and international competitions: the first prize in the Mathematical Contest In Modeling, the first prize in the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, the first prize in the Munich Re Actuarial Mathematics Competition, the highest prize in the National English Competition for College Students, the highest prize in Challenge Cup National College Student Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, and the golden medal in Challenge Cup Beijing Municipal College Student Business Plan Competition. According to statistics from the last three years, approximately 5 students have won the first prize and 34 students have won the second prize every year. Companies speak very highly of graduates for their outstanding capability and working performance.
